Coach's Recap
Ted Phoenix Regatta

  • This past weekend kicked off the first of two consecutive weeks of Virginia State Championship level rowing on the Occoquan with the Ted Phoenix Regatta.  It was another great day for W.T. Woodson Crew as all our boats qualified for finals in their respective categories!
  • The Girl’s Novice 8+ was 2nd in their morning heat and qualified for finals, where they placed 3rd overall and earned bronze medals.   This is the first time a WTW Girl’s Novice 8+ has medaled at the Ted Phoenix Regatta.  (Coxswain: Gwen Cameron; Rowers: Sierra Boucher, Sonja Korhonen, Meryn Holtslander, Hanna Korhonen, Rachel Hundley, Alex Schmidt, Sara Chan, and Carolyn Wong)
  • The Men’s 3V 8+ won their morning heat and qualified for finals, where they also placed 3rd overall and earned bronze medals.  This was the first time a Men’s 3V 8+ from WTW has raced at Ted Phoenix and medaled.   (Coxswain: Jared Keen; Rowers: James MaGee, Nate Aanestad, Jake Aytes, Brian Yoon, Sam Garretson, Michael Yi, Fin Merrill, and Sean Morrow)
  • The Men’s Freshmen 8+ was 2nd in their morning heat and qualified for finals.  In perhaps the most thrilling race of the day, the WTW freshman raced to a photo finish, finishing 4th but less than four seconds behind D.C. private school powerhouse St. Alban’s and less than 1.5 seconds out of second place.  Based on their performance throughout the season and in this championship race, the WTW Men’s Freshman 8+ has been invited to compete in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship held later this month in Princeton, New Jersey.  (Coxswain: Jonathan Kovacev; Rowers: Joe Korn, Kevin Kronenberger, Larry Cai, Jack Jabaley, Adrian Michel, Nathan Oh, John Drobredney, and Trevor von Christierson)
  • Please join us this Saturday, May 10th, at Sandy Run Regional Park on the Occoquan, where our remaining men's and women's Varsity boats will compete in the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championship Regatta.  Pull for Woodson!
