SRAA Nationals - 27-28 May 2016

2 Woodson boats finished in the Top 10 against the country’s best at the SRAA National Championships in Nashport, Ohio this weekend!

The Women’s Junior-8 finished 8th overall, using a great sprint to advance to the Semifinals, where they faced the Silver and Bronze medalists. The J8 recorded the top finish by a Virginia school – ahead of TC Williams (who WTW beat by open water in the Semifinal) and Langley – and was the 4th fastest public school! Elizabeth Field, Brooke Leech, Gabriella Hayes, Elizabeth Giglia, Meryn Holtslander, Rose van der Horst, Jenna Hissong, Kathryn Taheri, and Haley Cole (coxswain).

The Women’s Lightweight-8 posted the 9th fastest time, the second among Virginia schools, trailing only the Bronze medalist TC Williams. The Lights rowed a spirited race to defeat Lake Braddock and Yorktown for the first time all season! Co-Captain Coryn Mayer, Trini Hong, Reagan Smith, Anna Field, Sierra Boucher, Sara Chan, Paige Evans, Sophie Mills, and Caroline Hoskins (coxswain).

The Women’s First-4 drew a fast heat against the best of California, Illinois, New York, and Tennessee, rowed well, and finished 21st overall. Co-Captain Rita Bodrog, Claire Hutcheson, Hannah Fisher, Courtney Becker, and Erika Schneider (coxswain).

We would like to congratulate all of our Nationals rowers, and especially thank our seniors Rita and Coryn – way to go!

Stotesbury Cup Regatta - 20-21 May 2016

10 Woodson boats with 78 rowers and coxswains competed in the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, the largest high school regatta in the country, including 191 teams from the US & Canada. 

Two Woodson boats finished in the Top 10: Women’s Lightweight-8 finished 9th, and Women’s Junior-8 finished 10th, ahead of Semifinalists TC Williams, Langley, and Lake Braddock to claim the highest finish among Virginia schools, and 5th highest among public schools in the 46-boat event! Women’s First-4 finished 17th; these 3 WTW boats earned bids to the SRAA Nationals Regatta next weekend in Nashport, Ohio. Men’s First-8 finished 24th – only 1 Virginia school made the Top 20. Men’s Second-8 finished 17th.

VSRC State Championship Regatta Recap - 14 May 2016

A Woodson boat finished first at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships on the Occoquan Saturday, May 14! Women’s Second-4 posted the fastest time in the storm-interrupted Varsity State Championship regatta: Kristen Wahlbeck, Rowan Sprouse, Rachel Hundley, Joelle Perry, and Carolyn Wong (coxswain).

Women’s Junior-8 finished third in their event for the bronze! Elizabeth Field, Brooke Leech, Gabriella Hayes, Elizabeth Giglia, Meryn Holtslander, Rose van der Horst, Jenna Hissong, Kathryn Taheri, and Haley Cole (coxswain)

Two boats finished 5th overall: Men’s Second-8 and Women’s First-4, who won their Semifinal heat.

Men’s First-8 narrowly missed Finals by 1.2 seconds; unfortunately, the Men’s Junior-4 and Women’s Lightweight-8 were unable to compete due to the conditions.

We congratulate & thank the seniors on their final Occoquan regatta: Co-captains Val Jack, Joe Killion, Rita Bodrog, and Coryn Mayer, Griffin Adams, James Magee, Nico Marucchi, and Fin Merrill.

Ted Phoenix Championship Regatta Recap - 7 May 2016

29 schools sent freshman & novice rowers to compete at the Ted Phoenix Regatta – the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships for Lower Boats – on the Occoquan on Saturday, May 7. 3 of the 4 Woodson boats advanced from heats: Men’s Novice 4 & Women’s Novice 4 both placed 5th in their Grand Finals; Women’s Freshman 8 finished 5th in the Petite Final (11th overall); and Men’s Freshman 8 finished 5th in their heat. We congratulate yesterday’s freshman & novice rowers: MN4-Austin Whittle, Benjamin Wellstood, Max Rodriguez, Thomas Koerner, and Bo Swallow (coxswain); WN4-Audrey Kim, Stephanie Scorgie, Rose Khattab, Emily Kao, and Avery Whittle (coxswain); WF8-Marie Korn, Joy Kim, Christina Moore, Allison Perina, Gracie Rollins, Anna Courtney, Crystal Ho, Sage Boucher, and Sophie Depret-Guillaume (coxswain); and MF8-Richard Evans, Ethan Feng, Brandon Tse, Katon Zhang, Nick Shawley, Ethan Pepper, Gavin Bromberg, Jack Hayes, and Andrew Zack (coxswain). Next Saturday: Varsity State Championships!

Regional Park Regatta Recap

The Regional Park Regatta was held at the Occoquan on Saturday, April 2nd. It was our second regatta of the season for the experienced rowers and the first regatta ever for our novices. 30 different schools participated (listing here). WT Woodson crew entered 11 different events.

The regatta utilized block scheduling for the regatta so all the fours raced before the lunch break.

The Women’s First 4 finished 2nd in their heat of 5 boats to advance to the Final. In the final they rose to the occasion taking 1st place with . This is the second week in a row they have won this event (Rita Bodrog , Claire Hutcheson, Hannah Fisher, Courtney Becker, cox: Erika Schneider).

The Women’s Junior 4 finshed 2nd in a 5 boat Final behind visiting crew Holy Cross. (Rowan Sprouse, Alex Schmidt, Rachel Hundley, Kristen Wahlbeck, cox: Caroline Wong).

The Men’s Novice 4 raced in the first of two flights (non-championship events with more than 6 events do not have finals), winning their first ever race. (Ethan Kutia, Colin McCarthy, James Mullet, Grant McHale, cox: Heston McClintick). A great start to the rowing carriers of these Cavaliers.

After the lunch break the 8s got into the action

The Men’s First 8 finished 2nd in their morning heat of 5 boats, and 6th overall in finals after suffering a crab. (Joe Killion, Val Jack, Joe Korn, Jack Ning, James Magee, Finn Merrill, Adrian Michel, Trevor von Christierson, cox: Gwen Cameron)

The Men’s Second 8 finished 2nd in their morning heat of 5 boats, and 4th overall in finals. (Ryan Torgersen, Larry Cai, James Livingston, Miles Knight, Michael Boyle, Ryan Sarratt, Wyn Adams, Griffin Adams, cox: Nico Marucchi)

The Women’s Lightweight 8 finished 3rd in a four boat race. 8: Sierra Boucher, Trini Hong, Reagan Smith, Sophie Mills, Coryn Mayer, Paige Evans, Anna Field, Sara Chan, cox: Caroline Hoskins)

The Women’s Junior 8 finished 3rd in a 6 boat race. (Meryn Holtslander, Rose van der Horst, Gabriella Hayes, Elizabeth Giglia, Jenna Hissong, Elizabeth Fields, Kathryn Taheri, Brooke Leech, cox: Haley Cole)

The Men's 3rd 8 finished 2nd in their flight of 4 boats (Brandon Snyder, Sam Shear, Ben Epley, Allen Moran, Joshua Ackerman, Sam Muras, Aaron Shurberg, Jung Won Lee, cox: John Fritzinger)

The Men’s Freshman 8 finished 4th in a 5 boat flight. (James Mullet, Katon Zhang, Rory McAlevy, Ethan Feng, Nick Shawley, Ethan Pepper, Jack Hayes, Gavin Bromberg cox: Andrew Zack)

The Women’s Freshman 8 finished 2nd in a 6 boat flight that was shortened due to boats colliding during the start, important information when looking at the times. It sounded like the race was quite the adventure, as freshman races tend to be at this point in the season. (Marie Korn, Joy Kim, Christina Moore, Sage Boucher, Gracie Rollins, Anna Courtney, Crystal Ho, Emily Kao, cox: Sophie Depret-Guillaume)

Ending our racing for the day, the Men’s Novice 8 finished 3rd in their 4 boat (Austin Whittle, Benjamin Wellstood, Richard Evans, Brandon Tse, Max Rodriguez, Daehyun Kim, Seung Ahn, Thomas Koerner, cox: Beau Swallow).

Official results are posted (note: lineup changes made Thursday and Friday are not showing up in the results. Their system froze the names when they created the first draft of the schedule. They are looking into fixing the problem)

It was a long day, but a great start for our novice rowers, and a Walter Mess Regatta on the Occoquan. Racing starts at 0900. It will once again follow a block schedule with fours in the morning and 8s after the lunch break. Pull for Woodson!

Polar Bear Regatta, 23 March 2016

Polar Bear Regatta Recap by Head Coach Bryan Tylander

The annual (well, when it is held) Polar Bear Regatta was held at the Occoquan on Saturday, March 23rd. It was our first regatta of the season for the experienced rowers and a nice culmination to the hard work done over spring break.

The Women’s First 4 finished 1st out of the 5 teams that entered . (Rita Bodrog , Claire Hutcheson, Hannah Fisher, Courtney Becker and Erika Schneider). A great start to the season for the top girl's boat, winning by 9 seconds over 2nd place.

The Men’s First 8 finished 2nd in their morning heat and 4th overall in finals. (Joseph Korn, Joe Killion, Jack Ning, Valentine Jack, James Magee, Fin Merrill, Trevor von Christierson, Adrian Michel, Niccolo Marucchi). 8 teams entered the event.

The Men’s Second 8 finished 2nd in their morning heat, and 5th overall in finals. (Ryan Torgersen, Larry Cai, James Livingston, Sam Shear, Michael Boyle, Allen Moran, Wyn Adams, Ryan Sarratt, Gwen Cameron). 8 teams entered the event.

The Women’s 2nd 4 dominated their event finishing 1st of 3 boats and finishing a whopping 26 seconds in front of 2nd place. (Coryn Mayer, Rowan Sprouse, Rose van der Horst, Alex Schmidt, Carolyn Wong)

The Women’s Lightweight 8 finished 2nd in a two boat race. (Sierra Boucher, Trini Hong, Reagan Smith, Sophie Mills, Sara Chan, Paige Evans, Kesem Solell, Joelle Perry, Caroline Hoskins)

The Women’s Junior 8 finished a close second in a 3 boat race. (Meryn Holtslander, Brooke Leech, Gabriella Hayes, Elizabeth Giglia, Jenna Hissong, Rachel Hundley, Kathryn Taheri, Kristen Wahlbeck, Haley Cole)

The Men's 3rd 8 finished 3rd out of 5 (Brandon Snyder, Sam Muras, Ben Epley, Jun Won Lee, Joshua Ackerman, Miles Knight, Aaron Shurberg, Kevin Cronin, Sebastian Bushey).

While some boats were very excited with their results and others where disappointed, it is a long way till the end of the season and all crews will have to work hard to increase speed over then next 5 weeks before championships starts.

Please join us this Saturday, April 2nd, at the Regional Park Regatta on the Occoquan. Racing starts at 0900. It will be the first race for all the novice rowers, and hopefully a great start to their rowing careers.
