Head Coach’s Race Recap

With three weeks remaining the WTW Crew’s 2013 season, the clubs’ Freshman/Novice crews seized the opportunity to set the tone of Championship season and ran with it!

The Men’s Novice 8+ coached by Doug Payne ushered the day’s racing at 9:48am with a 2nd place finish in their heat with a time of 5:19.02. The Women’s Novice 4+ finished 1st in their heat with a 6:12.40, and the Men’s Freshman 8+ finished 3rd in their heat with a time of 5:02.21. All three crews qualified and advanced to afternoon finals.

The Men’s Novice 8+ was the first Woodson crew of the day which found itself on the awards dock finishing 3rd in their championship race to Langley and Yorktown with a time of 5:08.02 capping their season off with bronze medals! The Women’s Novice 4+ coached by Kristie Colorado finished 2nd in their championship race behind Fairfax with a time of 6:13.02 earning silver medals of their own!

Woodson’s final championship race of the Ted Phoenix Regatta, the Men’s Freshman 8+, was about as exciting as racing can get. The Woodson boys coached by Leslie Pease held off a furious sprint by St Albans locking up 3rd place, bronze medals, and qualifying for SRAA Nationals by 0.34 seconds! They pulled a 4:51.39 and will join Madison and Washington-Lee representing the state of Virginia in New Jersey on May 24th.

I would like to congratulate all of our first year crews on their amazing performances at the Ted Phoenix Regatta, all their hard work this season, and their tremendous success! Please join the team this Saturday May 11th for the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championship where we will learn which Varsity crews will be joining our Men’s Freshman 8+ at SRAA Nationals in New Jersey!

Pull for Woodson!
