Head Coach’s Race Recap

Week two of the 2013 regular season began at 10:03am with a second place finish by the Men’s 1st Four with a time of 5:44.56. Thanks in part to some quick thinking by coxswain Jax Ohashi at the start, the Men’s 2nd Four followed with another first place finish with a time of 5:34.70 edging South County by 4 seconds. The Men’s Junior Eight brought home a 1st place finish for the second week in a row with a time of 5:19.9 about 20 seconds ahead of second place!

The Woodson women hit the water and opened Woodson’s afternoon racing at 12:00pm. The Women’s Junior Four finished 1st about 8 seconds ahead of Mt. Vernon with a time of 7:12.10. The Women’s Junior Eight followed with a 1st place time of 6:15.70 winning by 19 seconds. Expect to see them take on some stronger competition in the Women’s First Eight category in coming weeks.

Let’s not forget the newbies! In a freak equipment malfunction at the start, the Men’s Freshmen Eight were unable to finish their race. They are fired up to make their ‘unofficial’ debut next weekend. In a true nail biter, the Women’s Novice Four debuted with a 1st place finish making it down the course in 6:20.3 seconds, 5 seconds faster than 2nd place Gloucester. The Men’s Novice closed out the day around 1:30pm with a 2nd place finish to Oakton!

Please join the team and 1,100 other rowers from Northern Virginia next week for our 3rd Regatta of the season, the Walter Mess. Racing begins at 9am with students reporting to the boathouse at 6:30am. Thank you for your support.

In Coach Julie Sutliff’s Woodson debut, The Women’s Junior Four (having never even practiced on the course this season!) finished 2nd to Jefferson with a time of 7:13.2.
