Thank you to all who were able to join us for the Parent On-the-Water Meeting last Thursday. Here is the link to the slides presented. If you were not able to attend, you are encouraged to review the slides to prepare for the competitive season ahead.

We took possession of our new Vespoli VHP53 boat last week. We can’t wait to get it rigged up and on the water!



We had a great trip to the USNA. Approximately 40 rowers attended the field trip and enjoyed the chance to workout at the exceptional Navy Crew training facility including the indoor rowing tank, “The Great 8”. Photos from the day are posted on our team photo share site here

1. REMINDER: Lightweight Testing This Week. Any boy under 155 lb and any girl under 135 lb is strongly encouraged to go through the lightweight (lwt) testing protocol to determine if they can safely and healthily row in a lightweight boat. Going through the testing protocol does not mean you will row in a lwt boat, but missing the testing means you can not be considered for one. This will take place during winter conditioning on the following dates:
  • Tuesday, Feb 12th 3:30 -- Girls 
  • Wednesday, Feb 13th 3:30 -- Boys 
  • Thursday, Feb 14th -- Make-up 
One of the key components of the testing protocol is hydration, so athletes that plan on getting tested should drink LOTS of fluids in the 48 hours before they test. If you have any questions about what the testing entails feel free to contact Coach Tylander at btylander@gmail.com

2. UPDATE: WTW Crew Boathouse Workday this Saturday, February 16th at Sandy Run Regional Park, 10450 Van Thompson Rd, Fairfax Station. To volunteer, please sign-up here. We have added some more specific roles for individuals with the following:
  • carpentry skills 
  • experience applying/removing paint/decals with a heat gun 
  • experience with small watercraft electrics 
When you get to Sandy Run, please go to Boathouse #1 to meet the other WTW Crew volunteers.

3. NEW: Spirit Wear Store Open. Woodson Crew Spirit Wear Store is available and orders must be placed by midnight, February 24th. Click on the link above to access the site. Items ordered will be available for distribution before the first regatta on March 23rd.

This is optional spirit wear; none of the items from this site are required to be purchased. Rowers and coxswains will find many useful items and parents are also encouraged to order items for themselves (hats, polos, T-shirt’s, fleece). Wearing Spirit Wear to regattas is a great way to identify other Woodson fans to cheer with.

4. REMINDER: Parent Social on February 22nd from 7:30-10:30pm. Please come enjoy this relaxed social gathering before Regatta season kicks in! It's a great opportunity to meet and connect with Coaches and other Crew Parents (both seasoned and new!). Adults only. This is a heavy appetizer & dessert, BYO-adult beverage event! 5. NEW: Optional VASRA Coxswain Clinic. There is a coxswain clinic being offered for a nominal $15 fee on February 24th from noon to 4pm at South County High School by Laura Simon. Laura has a wealth of rowing knowledge gained over her extensive career in the sport. She spent six years on the UMass women's staff and is currently coaching at Yale. She has experience with USRowing both as a competitor and coach of the Youth Olympics, High Performance and Coxswains. To register for this event, please click here. Please be advised that experienced junior and senior coxswains are asked to provide a five (5) minute recording for critique.

6. NEW: VASRA Volunteer Positions. We are required to provide volunteers for various VASRA (Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association) jobs before and during the Regattas we participate in at Sandy Run (aka Occoquan). We are fortunate this year to have many new families and ask at this time that each family sign up for one VASRA volunteer slot. If we do need to impose our 2nd volunteer requirement, the team will be informed. There are several dates, times, and locations within the park. (Please note: shifts with no ending times go until the work is done) Some jobs require a level of physical fitness or skill. Please please PLEASE check this link before you sign up to make sure you know what you are signing up for. All shifts on this signup below take place at regattas held at Sandy Run, 10450 Van Thompson Road, Fairfax Station. Please sign-up here.

7. REMINDER: Scrip. Valentine’s Day is this week. Scrip can help and is a great way to support team fundraising at the same time. Email wtwcrewfundraising@gmail.com to sign up for E-Scrip where you can purchase E-gift cards. Scrop gives great rebates to the team. Some examples of the rebates the team gets (at no extra charge to you) are: Maggiano's - 16%, Mortons -10%, SpaFinder-17%. and See's Candies - 20%.

8. REMINDER: Volunteer Opportunity. Shadow to Board Treasurer - Our current treasurer, Allison Kim, is the parent of a senior. Therefore, the role of treasurer for the board of directors will be open next year. She has done an outstanding job in the role for two years and will set the next treasurer up for success. Because of the importance of this role, we are looking for someone to shadow Allison for the remainder of this year and then take over next year. (after official election at the annual meeting in June.) A shadow in this role will earn 50% of the volunteer credits this year = 1 VASRA commitment, 2 team commitments.

  • March 15--Team Pictures at the river - athletes need their uniform. If you received a photo order form at the Parent On-the-Water Meeting, you can pre-order online or send in the order form and check with your student-athlete on March 15th. We discovered the ID # on the forms handed out at the On-the-Water meeting last week is not working. We have contacted the company and are awaiting a new ID # which we will share once received. Forms will also be available at the Parent Social on February 22nd as well as at the Parent Away Regatta Meeting on March 13th.
