As a reminder to parents, we are missing some parent driver forms in registration materials. We require these for emergency purposes in case parents need to pick up students other than their own from practice or regattas. This topic will be covered and we will have hard copy forms available at the February 7th Parent On-The-Water Meeting as well.

We would also like to announce that the practice bus is now full and we are not accepting any more sign-ups.

1. NEW: Restaurant Fundraiser at Coyote Grille on January 24th (this Thursday). Please join us at the Coyote Grille (10266 Main Street Fairfax, VA 22030) to support the team on Thursday, January 24, anytime between 11am and 9pm. Print out the attached flyer and present it to your server to ensure that 15% of the cost of your meal or carry-out will be included in the WT Woodson Crew Team fundraiser.

2. REMINDER: Here is the link to the Team Store. You can use your own credit card to order required team uniform items as well as training gear. Everyone MUST get their order in by midnight (PST) on January 27, 2019. If you miss the store closing date, you will need to order your uniform as an individual, directly from JL. For individual orders, pricing and shipping will be different than a team purchase.

If you are new to the team, you are required to purchase both a unisuit and a tech shirt (these are unisex sizes even though they are listed on the site as “men’s”).

If you are a returning rower, no need to order unless your uniform no longer fits, is damaged, or is missing!

Please refer to the sizing guidelines at the top of the Team Store page. If you are in-between sizes, go up a size. Coach Tylander recommends freshmen, male rowers go up a size, especially if they are between sizes. Please be careful that you order a unisuit for the appropriate gender; a male uni fits very differently than one made for a female.

The Team Store also has optional gear like compression shorts, sports bras, hats, and splash jackets.

If you have any questions please contact our team order administrator:
Babette Korn
Email: gwkorn@yahoo.com
Phone: 703-568-3985
Planned delivery for Team Order: March 9, 2019

3. REMINDER: Slack. Slack is a communications tool combining the best elements of text messaging and email. We are using Slack for coach and athlete communications and a separate Slack space for parent/guardian urgent communications.

Parent/Guardian Slack: We were unable to send Slack invites from the Slack wt-woodson-crew account directly to all parents/guardians as the system limits the number of pending invites at one time. All parents/guardians with last names beginning with A-O and emails registered in our system should have received email invites to sign up in the system. For those we were not able to send an invite to from the Slack wt-woodson-crew account, the email version of this message contains an invite link you can click on and join from the link. The intent is for this Slack space to only be used by parents/guardians since the coach and student-athletes are using a separate Slack space.

Here is a link to an easy to use Slack guide.

Coach/Athlete Slack: Your student-athlete’s coach or team captains have likely reached out to your student-athlete to sign up for Slack. Student-Athletes have a separate Slack account so that they may communicate practice, training, and regatta information.

We sent specific emails to parents/guardians of student-athletes under the age of 16 to obtain consent. Thank you to parents/guardians who already responded. If you have not responded to the consent request, please do so as soon as possible so we know who we can include on the Coach/Athlete Slack. If a parent/guardian decides not have their child on Slack, we encourage them to sign up for the parent Slack, keep an eye on Twitter, the weekly emails, and all of our other means of communication. Your athlete may also keep in touch with their team captain via text to receive timely practice related information.

4. REMINDER: U.S. Naval Academy Field Trip to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, February 9th. Registration for this event must be done on Sign-up Genius no later than next Thursday, January 31, 2019.

The cost is $30 per rower, cash or checks made out to WT Woodson Crew Boosters can be brought to practice or payment is also available via PAYPAL here. Payments must be made no later than Monday, February 4th.

Send check payments and FCPS Permission Form to:
Lesley Kowalski
Vice President for Student Activities
W.T. Woodson Crew Boosters
8306 Chapel Lake Dr, Annandale, VA 22003

5. REMINDER: Two Tag Days Left. Our last two Tag Days are January 26th (morning and afternoon shift) and February 2nd. We still have a few student-athlete slots available for anyone who hasn’t signed up yet. Once in Sign-up Genius, scroll down to the appropriate date(s) and shift(s). Sign-up here.

6. NEW: WTW Crew and VASRA Workdays on February 16th. Two opportunities to help make the spring regatta season a success: WTW Crew and Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association (VASRA) are both holding workdays Saturday, February 16th.

All shifts take place at Sandy Run Regional Park, 10450 Van Thompson Rd, Fairfax Station.

To volunteer for the WTW Crew Boathouse Workday, please sign-up here. When you get to Sandy Run, please go to Boathouse #1 to meet the other WTW Crew volunteers.

To volunteer for the VASRA Workday, please sign-up here. The VASRA shifts satisfy a VASRA obligation towards your family's volunteer requirements! When you get there, check in with a VASRA member and they will direct you to your specific area and job(s) for the day. More VASRA shifts will be available once the season gets underway!

7. NEW: USRowing Memberships and Waivers: WTW Crew has paid Basic USRowing membership renewal fees for all returning student-athletes whose memberships were due to expire during the spring regatta season. It has also paid membership fees for novice and freshman student-athletes who are registered in Ronin. Your student-athlete will receive more information about how to complete the USRowing Waiver this week at practice. Please sign the waiver as soon as possible. Parents need to sign if the student-athlete is under 18. Student-athletes over 18 can sign for themselves. Many 9th grade parents submitted signed copies of the USRowing waiver during Green Days in the fall, but this step is still needed now that their student-athlete’s membership is active.

8. REMINDER: WTW Crew Yard Sale. We’ve got a shiny new boat to pay for so we are bringing back the Rummage Sale on April 28th (May 5th is our rain date). So if you have any athletic gear/clothing/books/games/tools/kitchenware you no longer want that still has some life left in it and set it aside for the crew team. Shifts for volunteer credit will be available. Stay tuned for more details!
