Congrats to everyone who participated in the Erg Sprints at T.C. Williams High School on Saturday. We had 30 student-athletes and one coach participate! A great showing by Woodson Crew!  Some photos from the event can be found on our SmugMug Page here, and a few videos here.

1. REMINDER: Parent on-the-water orientation: Join us This Thursday February 6 from 7-9 PM in WT Woodson Cafeteria B. Winter conditioning is nearly over. Join us to learn what to expect from crew once the competitive regatta season starts. We will share important information for novice and returning parents alike. Board representatives, coaches and team captains will be on hand to answer questions. Membership will help you complete any outstanding registration requirements including Parent/Student Driver forms, emergency care forms and US Rowing Waivers that night.

2. REMINDER: Restaurant Fundraiser at Mamma Lucia in Fair City Mall TONIGHT: Bring your hungry athlete to Mamma Lucia in Fair City Mall after Winter Conditioning tonight, February 3 between 4 and 9 PM and mention Woodson Crew or bring this flyer to have a portion of the proceeds benefit the team. Tell your friends and come out for pizza, pasta and more.

3. REMINDER: Practice Bus: If your student is a rider on the practice bus, you need to sign up for your chaperone duty. Sign up here as soon as you can commit to a day. There are still many openings that must be filled.

Also, if you are on the practice bus, but circumstances change and you don’t want to hold the seat, please let us know ASAP. There is a waitlist and it is likely your spot will be filled, but we want to be fair to our fellow crew families, so we want to fill seats in order of waitlist. Contact wtwcrewactivities@gmail.com to notify about a bus change.

4. REMINDER: Carpools: Although the bus taking students to crew practice at Sandy Run is completely full, students and their parents are organizing carpools to make sure everyone gets to the water safely. Join the carpool channel in the parent Slack to arrange rides for practices. (Not on Slack? Email to request an invitation now.)

5. REMINDER: Tag Days: Thank you to everyone for hitting the streets for Saturday’s Tag Day. The FINAL TAG DAY is scheduled for next Saturday, February 8.

All rowers and coxswains — including novices — are required to participate in some part of Tag Days, so if you haven’t been able to get the required number of shifts, Saturday is your last chance. Please sign up now to fulfill your Tag Day requirement. Please contact WTW Crew volunteer chair Susan Burger if you have questions about Tag Days at wtwcrewvolunteer@gmail.com

6. REMINDER: Boathouse Workday February 15: Please sign up now to volunteer for a boathouse workday to prepare for the on-the-water season to begin. We’ll need volunteers to put launches in the water, get shells rigged and cleaned, organize the cox shed and more. We’ll also need a parent with a pickup truck to help in getting fuel for the launches. We need athletes and parents to volunteer and make this workday a success. Sign up now.

And if it’s your first time visiting Sandy Run, stick around for a tour of the site (conditions permitting) to be prepared to cheer on the team when regatta season begins in March.

7. REMINDER: VASRA Requirement: Every family has a requirement to help support our parent organization, VASRA, which helps make our regattas possible. Look for a sign-up genius with volunteer opportunities around each regatta of our season. If you’re interested in learning how to do some of the set-up tasks — the most important work to make these events a success — you can get trained on becoming a ‘river rat’ on Saturday, February 15th. Learn more at vasra.org

8. NEW: Parent Social: Get to know the fellow parents of Woodson Crew before the season gets under way. We’re grateful to the McCarthy family for hosting this event Friday, February 28 from 7 to 10 pm at their home, 4003 Hunting Pines Court in Fairfax. This is a great opportunity to meet and connect with the coaches as well as other crew Parents (both seasoned and new!). This year, we’ll be raffling off some FUNdraising items including passes for Flight trampoline park, Pev’s Paintball and the Cave Gaming Center. This is a heavy appetizer & dessert, BYO-adult beverage event for parents only! Sign up now to bring join us and bring something to share.

9. KEEP IN TOUCH: There are lots of ways to keep up with Woodson Crew. If you aren’t already, please follow us on Twitter @WoodsonCrew for all the latest news and updates. You can also follow us on Instagram @wtwoodsoncrew. We also communicate with families through the messaging app Slack. If you aren’t on, contact the WTW Crew Communications VP and request an invite. And here’s a guide to getting on Slack once you do.
