  12. Important Dates

Thanks to those who joined us Thursday for the parent on-the-water meeting and for everyone who has been out walking our neighborhoods for this off-season’s tag days. Our students have had very strong turnout and results from the tag day fundraising and we’re in great shape to get on the water next month.

1. NEW: Parent on-the-water orientation: Hopefully you were able to join us at the parent on-the-water orientation Thursday night. If not, you can download the presentation here. If you have questions, you can ask in Slack and a board member will help out.

2. REMINDER: Membership Forms: The Woodson Crew Membership team is working hard to make sure every athlete can get on the water on February 24th. But they need your help. Make sure all your membership registration forms are turned in ASAP. Parent and student driver forms and student emergency care forms must be turned in to the membership team. The parent and student online concussion safety training signature page and a VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2019 must be turned in to the Woodson trainer's office, Room C158. Find missing forms and instruction here.

3. REMINDER: Carpools: Although the bus taking students to crew practice at Sandy Run is completely full, students and their parents are organizing carpools to make sure everyone gets to the water safely. Join the carpool channel in the parent Slack to arrange rides for practices. (Not on Slack? Email to request an invitation now.)

And if your student is on the bus, you must fill one bus chaperone slot. Sign up now

4. NEW: Spring Break Bus Poll: Head over to the parent Slack and look for the poll in the 'general' channel to tell us if you’d be interested in a spring break bus. Your interest will tell us whether renting a bus is viable for spring break 2020.

5. REMINDER: Boathouse Workday February 15: Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer for the boathouse workday to prepare for the on-the-water season to begin. We still need a few student volunteers to help put launches in the water, get shells rigged and cleaned, organize the cox shed and more. We can also use a second parent with a pickup truck to help retrieve fuel for the launches. Sign up now.

And if it’s your first time visiting Sandy Run, stick around for a tour of the site (conditions permitting) to be prepared to cheer on the team when regatta season begins in March. Coach Joe plans to begin the Sandy Run Park tour about 11 AM.

6. REMINDER: VASRA Requirement: Every family has a requirement to help support our parent organization, VASRA, which helps make our regattas possible. You can sign up now to work the concession booth, drive a launch during the regatta, staff the finish line or support the recovery dock. Sign up now to make sure we fulfill our obligation to VASRA and have a great 2020 season.

If you’re interested in joining the “river rats” to set up the course in the early morning hours before regattas, there is a training 1-3 PM Saturday, February 15th. Learn more at vasra.org

7. REMINDER: Nutrition Information: Parents may find that their athlete will be requiring more food once they are practicing on the water and the competitive regatta season has begun. Get some pointers about nutrition for rowers and a outline of the different kinds of food they require at different times (during the week, on regatta day, after races, etc) from this presentation, also available on our website.

8. REMINDER: Parent Social: Get to know the fellow parents of Woodson Crew before the season gets under way. We’re grateful to the McCarthy family for hosting this event Friday, February 28 from 7 to 10 pm at their home, 4003 Hunting Pines Court in Fairfax. This is a great opportunity to meet and connect with the coaches as well as other crew parents (both seasoned and new!). This year, we’ll be raffling off some FUNdraising items including passes for Flight trampoline park, Pev’s Paintball and the Cave Gaming Center. This is a heavy appetizer & dessert, BYO-adult beverage event for parents only! Sign up now to bring join us and bring something to share.

9. NEW: Restaurant Night at Chipotle March 10: Help the team raise money and get full by joining us Tuesday March 10 from 4-8 PM at Chipotle on Pickett Road, right by the school. Be on the lookout for a flyer in an email later this month then stop by Chipotle for dinner March 10!

10. NEW: Parent Away-Regatta Info Session: Once the athletes are on the water, it’s time to start thinking about our away regatta schedule. We’ll hold our away regatta parent info session to answer all your questions Tuesday, March 11 from 7 to 9 PM in Woodson Cafeteria B. Our first ‘travel’ regatta is by invitation at St. Andrews School in Middletown, DE. The other away regattas are the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia, PA and SRAA Nationals (pending qualification) in Camden, NJ. Learn more at the info session next month.

11. KEEP IN TOUCH: There are lots of ways to keep up with Woodson Crew. If you aren’t already, please follow us on Twitter @WoodsonCrew for all the latest news and updates. You can also follow us on Instagram @wtwoodsoncrew. We also communicate with families through the messaging app Slack. If you aren’t on, contact the WTW Crew Communications VP and request an invite.
