1. REMINDER: On-the-water practice: Hopefully, all the athletes have forms completed and rides arranged so they can participate in the first on-the-water practice of the 2020 Crew Season. If you still have questions about what will be happening over the next three months, you can download the parent’s on-the-water presentation here. And of course, feel free to ask a question in Slack and a crew boosters board member will try and help out. Remember, until regattas begin, the practice schedule is:

Monday through Friday (until the week of March 14th when regatta season begins)

Depart Woodson at approximately 3:30 p.m. (By bus or carpool)

Practice at “the River” from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m.

Return to Woodson at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Shower, eat, homework, sleep, repeat

Saturday Practices

Practice Schedule: 8:30 – 11:00 a.m. (No bus)

2. REMINDER: Practice Bus Chaperone: If your athlete is on the bus, as noted in the Bus Agreement Registration: “Every family must provide an adult chaperone for a practice date at least one time per rower for the round- trip.” There is still one open slot in March and a handful open in April and a fair amount in May. There should be no open slots at this point. Every bus participating family should be signed up for a chaperone date. Please sign up now! We are working on the Spring Break Bus information arrangement and will share information next week — but for now we really need to get these chaperone slots filled. Sign up today!

3. NEW: Pre-Regatta Dinner Hosts and Chaperones. The WTW Crew Team enjoys pre-regatta dinners each Friday night during the season. Host homes are needed along with chaperones to help the host family. Host homes must be able to accommodate a buffet-style meal for 80-100 athletes. It’s a great idea to attend one of the Friday night dinners before your first time hosting so you can get a sense of what is involved in making one of these dinners a success. Hosts homes provide disposable paper products (strong plates, forks, knives, no cups needed), serving utensils, and trash receptacles (1 per room recommended). (The food is provided potluck-style and food assignments will be outlined in future communications.) Chaperones help with set-up, clean-up, and oversight. This is a working event for the volunteers, so if you volunteer to host, you’ll receive two volunteer credits while chaperones receive one. Please sign up here if you are available.

4. REMINDER: Spirit Wear Store is OPEN: Head over to the WT Woodson Crew Spirit Wear store and check out a great selection of hats, shirts, vests and totes to wear while you cheer on your athlete. The store stays open until midnight March 8 and a portion of sales benefits the team. Visit today!

5. REMINDER: VASRA Requirement: Every family has a requirement to help support our parent organization, VASRA, which helps make our regattas possible. You can sign up now to work the concession booth, drive a launch during the regatta, staff the finish line or support the recovery dock. Sign up now to make sure we fulfill our obligation to VASRA and have a great 2020 season.

6. REMINDER: Parent Social: Soon, we’ll be cheering together on the grandstand and volunteering at the RAFT tent, so it’s a good time to get to know the other parents of Woodson Crew. Come to the parent social and connect with the coaches as well as other crew parents, both returning and new. We’re grateful to the McCarthy family for hosting this event Friday, February 28 from 7 to 10 pm at their home, 4003 Hunting Pines Court in Fairfax. Don’t forget, we’ll also be raffling off some FUNdraising items including passes for Flight trampoline park, Pev’s Paintball and the Cave Gaming Center. This is a heavy appetizer & dessert, BYO-adult beverage event for parents only! Sign up now to bring join us and bring something to share.

7. REMINDER: Restaurant Night at Chipotle March 10: Help the team raise money and get full by joining us Tuesday March 10 from 4-8 PM at Chipotle on Pickett Road, right by the school. Bring this flyer when you stop by Chipotle for dinner!

8. REMINDER: Parent Away-Regatta Info Session: Now that our athletes are on the water, it’s time to start thinking about our away regatta schedule. We’ll hold an information session on the three opportunities our students will have to travel to regattas and answer all your questions Wednesday, March 11 from 7 to 9 PM in Woodson Cafeteria B. Our first ‘travel’ regatta — and the first one for our novice rowers — is by invitation at St. Andrews School in Middletown, DE. The other away regattas are the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia, PA and SRAA Nationals (pending qualification) in Camden, NJ. Learn more at the info session next month. As information about these events changes year over year, we would appreciate if both new and returning rower families could attend this session.

9. REMINDER: Nutrition Info: As we discussed at the parent on-the-water meeting, your rower will be eating a lot more now that one-the-water practices have begun. Here’s the best way to prepare for feeding your hungry athlete.

10. KEEP IN TOUCH: There are lots of ways to keep up with Woodson Crew. If you aren’t already, please follow us on Twitter @WoodsonCrew for all the latest news and updates. You can also follow us on Instagram @wtwoodsoncrew. We also communicate with families through the messaging app Slack. If you aren’t on, contact the WTW Crew Communications VP and request an invite. And here’s a guide to getting on Slack once you do.
