1. WTW Crew competed well against the best competition on the East Coast at the fabled Stotesbury Regatta on Friday and Saturday!
  • Our Women’s 1st Varsity 8+ placed 13th in time trials and advanced to the Semi-Finals. They finished third out of all Virginia entries, behind only Madison and TC Williams. Congrats to Hannah Fisher, Claire Hutcheson, Gabriella Hayes, Elizabeth Giglia, Jenna Hissong, Rowan Sprouse, Rose van der Horst, Brooke Leech, and Erica Schneider (coxswain).
  • The Women’s Lightweight 8+ placed 7th in their time trials and missed Finals by only 0.7 seconds.
  • The Men’s 1st Varsity 8+ placed 24th out of 41 boats in time trials ahead of Wakefield, Oakton, TJ, Robinson, Fairfax, Yorktown, Briar Woods, and West Springfield.
  • The Men’s 2nd Varsity 8+ placed 17th out of 28 boats in time trials ahead of Oakton, Langley, TJ, Robinson, Fairfax, and Briar Woods.
  • The Women’s Varsity 4+ placed 48th out of 60 boats in time trials.
  • The Men’s Lightweight 4+ placed 28th out of 35 boats in time trials.
  • The Women’s Junior 8+ placed 36th out of 50 boats in time trials ahead of Oakton, TJ, West Springfield, St. Andrews, and Briar Woods.
  • The Men’s Junior 8+ placed 34th out of 54 boats in time trials ahead of Yorktown, Briar Woods, Arlington, Fairfax, and West Springfield.
We are exceedingly proud of the effort of all our rowers & coxswains -- and would especially note the Novice Men & Women who “rowed up” in the Junior 8+ categories against more experienced competition. We are not only proud of our rowers & coxswains performance on the water, but actions off the water too. The team had many compliments about the honor it was to have the team stay at the hotel. As an example, here is a note left under the hotel door of the Women’s 1st 4+.

Additional photos from the regatta can be found off our website in our Stotesbury photo gallery by Serena and Stotesbury 2017 photos by Grant Schneider. Thank you both for the amazing photos. There are also overhead photos on Row2k

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered before, during, and after the regatta to ensure it was a successful trip.
Thank you to our coaches for your encouragement, support, and time to make this such an amazing season!

2. NEW: There is bus service Monday-Wednesday this week. All team members should come to practice today, Monday, to unload the trailer and rig the boats. Practice Tuesday and Wednesday will be for those going to Nationals. Everyone will get back together at the Woodson Spring Sports Awards Night on 8 June and the WTW Crew Awards Dinner on 10 June.

3. Next stop, Nationals! The 2017 SRAA National Championship Regatta trip is 25-27 May on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ. Here is the new Nationals Page on our web site. Thank you again Andy!
  • This page has all things Nationals (links to event start times and results, hotel and contact info, weather, etc.), and will be updated as necessary throughout the event
  • Parent volunteers are still needed for this away regatta (even if you are not going to Nationals). Please sign-up here to volunteer.
  • This Wednesday, 24 May, luggage will be turned-in and medications with medications forms will be checked from 7:30-8:30pm at WT Woodson High School door #5, near the wrestling room. Practice will end early on 24 May and student-athletes must check in their own bag at the luggage drop off. Luggage will be stored in a locked room at school overnight and loaded prior to departure.
  • SRAA regatta wear is available for purchase online, but you likely will not receive items purchased prior to the regatta
  • If you are a parent chaperone taking the bus to Nationals and will be leaving your car at the school, you should park by door #17 near Main Street while away for the regatta
4. NEW: The splash jackets from JL Racing have arrived!! They were delivered after we departed on Thursday for Stotesbury. Parents should email Tu’lann at tulannvonc@cox.net to let her know how she can get them to the student-athletes.

We designed and printed team shirts for the Stotesbury regatta. These have the student-athlete names on the back. We had one made for every student-athlete and Tu’lann would like to get them to those that did not attend Stotesbury. Parents, please email Tu’lann at tulannvonc@cox.net on how to get them to you.

5. Next Year’s WTW Crew Boosters Positions. With the graduation of a record 19 seniors on the team, we are losing many great parents, along with their rowers & coxswains. While we are fortunate to have received good responses to our efforts to fill WTW Crew Boosters positions for next year, you know there are always opportunities to pitch in, and help share the load so our team is supported and can thrive. The below link identifies all of the available positions; we flag here two open ones that are critical to have filled by the fall: Membership Chair (men’s team) and Volunteer Committee Chair. If you are interested in these positions, or any others, please contact President Pamela Sprouse (wtwcrewpresident@gmail.com) or members of the WTW Crew Boosters Nominating Committee, Benton Fisher and Rebecca Phalan. Elections will be held at the year-end Crew Awards dinner on 10 June. Open positions can be seen here

6. The first step toward eligibility to participate in any preseason or after school athletic event is to complete a sports physical on an official VHSL Pre-participation Physical Examination (PPE) form (new form for 2017-2018 school year is titled “FEB2017”). The Woodson High School Athletic Training Department will be offering sports physicals at Woodson High School on 19 June. This successfully completed physical will be good for all sports and out of season practices (green days, yellow days, weight room workouts) for the 2017-2018 school year. This event is a fundraiser for the Woodson High School Athletic Training Department. The cost of the physicals is $50 when you register online ($60 at the door space permitting). You can register here. They are always looking for medical and non-medical volunteers to assist for the event. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Ms. Fickes, kfickes@fcps.edu, or click on the registration link to sign up.

Don’t forget the student and parent concussion education must also be completed annually!!

7. Is your rower or coxswain participating in a summer rowing program? You may be required to provide proof of passing a swim test before he/she can start. Please email Jean Boyle at wtwcrewmembership@gmail.com to obtain a copy of your student-athlete’s WTW Crew Swim Test results.

8. Reminders:
  • SAVE THE DATES:
    • 8 June - Woodson Spring Sports Awards Night (7pm)
    • 10 June - WTW Crew Awards Dinner (5:30-8:30pm at Frost Elementary School Cafeteria)
  • Please share your accomplishments/achievements, no matter what it is, to wtwcrewcommunications@gmail.com. Send your submissions by Friday of each week. We will publish them in the following Monday issue of the WTW Crew Update.
