Fundraiser Tonight, Winter Conditioning, Tag Day, Swim Test, On-the-Water, Board Positions

Here are some reminders regarding this weekend and next week.

Tonight from 5-8pm, please join us at Banyan Tree South Asian Grill (3987 Pickett Road, Fairfax, VA 22031, in Turnpike shopping center between Peet's Coffee and Chipotle) for a WTW Crew Team fundraiser. Please come out and help your team earn some money while enjoying delicious Indian food with friends and family. No flyers needed -- just tell the cashier that you are supporting Woodson Crew and a percentage of sales will be donated to the team. This is our last fundraiser before we get on the water and we need the WHOLE team to participate! Thank you in advance for your support!

Winter Conditioning for tomorrow, Friday, 10 February will be boys from 3:30-5:30pm and girls 4:45-6:45pm. Only six more days of winter conditioning before we are on the water.

This Saturday, 11 February will be our last scheduled Tag Day. Tag Day is an easy way to fulfill one required service event for your rower and is worth $100 in volunteer credit. Spaces are still available on sign-up genius and the weather is supposed to be nice this Saturday.

This Saturday, 11 February from 2-3pm will also be our final swim test at Oak Marr Recreation Center. Register on the Sign Up Genius page. All new rowers and coxswains must have a successful swim test on record to go on the water.

NEW: Next Wednesday, 15 February at 4 pm any boy under 155 lbs should be at Ms. Fickes' office to undergo the lightweight (Lwt) protocol testing. On Thursday, 16 February at 4 pm the girls will do the same. If an athlete does not go through this they can not row in Lwt events this year.

On-the-Water practice begins on 21 February. We will discuss details of On-the-Water and Spring Break practices, as well as bus service to Sandy Run Park at the On-the-Water Parent meeting at 7pm on 15 February in the W.T. Woodson Cafeteria. A link to the slides will be sent out soon for you to preview.

Here is the planned schedule:

Standard Weekday Practice: 4:00-6:30pm
Bus departs Woodson at 3:30pm; arrives at Sandy Run at 4:00pm; departs Sandy Run at 6:30pm; and arrives at Woodson at 7:00pm.

Saturday Practices: 8:30-11:00am

Fridays during Regatta Weeks (which begin the week of 24 March):
Practice 4:00-5:30pm
Bus departs Woodson at 3:30pm; arrives at Sandy Run at 4:00pm; departs Sandy Run at 5:30pm; and arrives at Woodson at 6:00pm.

Team Regatta Dinners: 7:00-9:00pm

Spring Break:

10 April no practice
 
11-14 April practice: 8:30-11:30am and 12:30-2:15pm
Bus departs Woodson at 8:00am and returns to Woodson at 2:45pm

Saturday, normal practice times listed above

17 April practice: 9:00-12:00pm
Bus departs Woodson at 8:30am and returns to Woodson at 12:30pm

The bus is not available on the following days so student-athletes will need to carpool: 23, 24, 29 March; 5 May and 12 May.

Students driving to practice or regattas need to submit the Driver’s License and Vehicle Information Sheet. This is a FCPS requirement. Forms are not required for adult drivers. Fill in "Repeated Trip" explanation in right column with “To/From Crew Practices and Regattas.” School Principal Approval signature is not required. You may bring the form to the Parents’ Meeting on 15 February or mail/drop off the forms to:

The cost for bus riders is $450 which includes Spring Break. Payment and Bus Registration Agreement form is due in full by 17 February to the WTW Treasurer. Payments can be made at the On-the-Water meeting on 15 February.

In order for WTW Crew Boosters to provide bus transportation to practices, each trip to and from the river must have a parent chaperone. Every bus rider family must chaperone at least one time per rower. Practice Bus Sign Up Genius is available at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/508094eaaaa2da64-wtwcrew10.

NEW: Finally, we currently have 3 board positions open.
  1. Vice President for Team Liaison and Activities (VPTLA)- This position is an executive board position and fulfills $300 in volunteer credit; 2 VASRA jobs, 1 tag day, and 2 service shifts 
  2. Fundraising Chairperson- This position is a committee board position and fulfills $250 in volunteer credit; 2 VASRA jobs, 1 tag day, and 2 service shifts 
  3. Equipment/Logistics Chairperson (E/L)- This position is a committee board position and fulfills $250 in volunteer credit; 2 VASRA jobs, 1 tag day, and 2 service shifts 
Ask one of the current board members for further information if you are interested in any of these positions. These jobs are a great way to get involved, fulfill volunteer obligations, and participate in your child's sport.
