Thanks to Mary Claire Boucher, here are the first photos of the season to share with everyone. We look forward to sharing many more with you throughout the season.

1. SAVE THE DATE: Please join us on 12 October from 7-9pm for the 2017-2018 Parent Crew Interest Meeting in the WTW High School Cafeteria B. This is not just for parents of new rowers/coxswains. We have made changes to volunteer requirements and dues so please join us to learn more.

  • Committee Membership Chair position is open. If you are interested or have questions about the position, please contact Brian Boyle at wtwcrewpresident@gmail.com
  • Craft Show Steering Committee positions open. Our first major fundraiser is the Craft Sale and we are in urgent need of a Concessions Chair and a Publicity Co-Chair. If you are interested or have questions about these positions, please contact Lesley Kowalski, Craft Show Chair, at lesleytkowalski@gmail.com
  • NEW: We are still in need of parent volunteers for the concession stand at the 20 October WTW Home Football Game. Please sign up here if you are available to volunteer.
3. NEW: Launch Driver Training on 30 September. Sign-up here. Regattas at Sandy Run Regional Park depend upon volunteers for success. These volunteer positions (known as VASRA volunteer positions), are assigned to each participating team and must be filled or the regatta will fail. If a team does not fill a VASRA volunteer position – the team is fined $50.00. Being a member of WTW Crew includes fulfilling ‘volunteering’ requirements which include regular volunteering and two (2) VASRA volunteer positions during the season. One VASRA volunteer position is Launch Driver. Coach Tylander will teach a Launch Drivers class on Saturday, 30 September from 10 am to 12 pm (2 hours). Attendance is limited to the first six people to sign up and is open to any WTW Crew Parent/guardian – anyone can learn. So become a Launch Boat Driver, qualifying to meet a VASRA volunteer requirement, and have the best seat in the house during regattas, following the racers down the course.

4. REMINDER: Fall Green Days go through 7 October! There is still time to sign up for remaining Fall Green Days at WTW Crew Fall Green Days Sign-Up Genius. If you plan to attend, please sign-up so the coaches can plan the appropriate number of boats to launch.

Location: Sandy Run Regional Park – 10450 Van Thompson Road, Fairfax Station
Dates and Times: Tues, Thurs, & Sat between 19 September and 7 October (visit WTW Crew website for details)
Wear: Athletic clothing (dry wicking running shorts/tights and shirts are best)
Bring: The Emergency Care Form (for new rowers, see below) and a water bottle (reusable is best, but disposable is okay)
Note: Rowers/Coxswains must furnish their own transportation.

UPDATED: The Carpooling Sign-Up Genius (for those able to drive student-athletes or need a student-athlete driven) is active. There are student-athletes in need of rides so if you are available to provide a carpool ride, please check out the site to connect to those needing a ride.

NEW ROWERS: Before Participating in Green Days you need to complete the following:
  • VHSL Physical FormYou will need to get a physical, complete all sections of the VHSL form and submit it to the WTW Athletic Trainer, Ms. Fickes (located inside Door 5, Room C-158). NOTE: Turn in the completed physical as early as possible. It can take up to 5 business days for your name to show up on the compliance report our coach uses to clear you to row. Remember to keep a copy for your own records.
  • Emergency Care Form: Have your parent complete this form and bring a copy with you to the river the first day you row.
  • Swim Test: All new rowers must pass a specific swim test given by one of our coaches before he/she can row. This test is required only once. Sign up here for one of the swim tests on 10 or 16 September - specific details located on the sign up page.
  • US Rowing Membership & Sign the US Rowing Waiver: Before any rower is allowed on the water, he/she must join US Rowing. The cost is $7.75, and you will be reimbursed this amount if you participate in at least one Green Day. To get started, visit the USRowing Membership Site. On the main portal page, JOIN as an INDIVIDUAL. When asked what team or club you belong to type in WTW. That will cause a blue bar with the words WTW CREW BOOSTERS to appear. Click on the blue bar. Then a pop up window will open asking for Club Code Verification. Enter DURXS (all uppercase letters). You’ll continue to input information over the next couple of pages. At step 4 – Compliance, an adult needs to read and agree to the Waiver. This will take you to the Checkout at Step 5.
RETURNING ROWERS: You are required to have a current VHSL Physical Form on file at WTW. You currently have all other necessary requirements completed.

5. NEW: FCPS Online Concussion Training. Online concussion training is required by one parent and the rower prior to the rower participating in Winter Conditioning. Because the FCPS online program has had a few ‘glitches’ in the past, we request you complete the training ASAP. To increase your chances of the online training working the first time, please follow this guidance from FCPS: “Due to circumstances beyond our control the online verification program is not compatible with Internet Explorer nor Chrome. Please use Firefox or Safari to complete the program. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” The link for training is on the FCPS Student Athletics site. After the rower and one parent completes the training send an email to membership at www.wtwcrewmembership@gmail.com

6. Craft Fair Fundraiser. A craft fair vendor is making WTW Crew oars (seen in the picture below) into hat/coat racks for $69 each and will donate $10 from sale of each one to the team! If you are interested in pre-ordering, please contact Lesley Kowalski, Craft Show Chair, at lesleytkowalski@gmail.com.

7. WEBSITE TIPS: Have you ever gone to WTW Crew website, but didn’t know where to find something? We hope the site is intuitive, but if you still don’t know where to look you can use the “Search this site” bar in the upper right of the page to search the entire site.
