1. UPDATE: WTW Crew purchased USRowing memberships for all rowers whose membership has or will expire during the spring racing season. We also purchased memberships for new rowers who did not participate in Green Days last fall. The next step for those individuals is to sign the USRowing Waiver. If you need to sign your rowing waiver, your coach will give you a reminder slip this week. It contains your USRowing membership number and instructions. Please sign the waiver as soon as possible. If you renewed or purchased your membership last fall, no action is needed at this time. Rowing waivers now run concurrent with rowing memberships. If you have not registered in Ronin racing yet, we did not purchase a membership for you.

2. REMINDER: Our Parent Social is Tuesday, January 30th at Dolce Vita restaurant (10824 Fairfax Blvd, Fairfax) from 7-9 pm. This is an opportunity to get to know each other, meet the coaches, and learn more about the sport and the season. We will provide heavy appetizers. Individuals will be responsible for covering their own beverage purchases. We hope you can join us! If you have not already done so, please RSVP here if you plan on attending so we can make sure there is enough space in the Wine Bar closed off for us and to ensure we have enough food.
NEW NOTE: As an additional enticement to attend, a Crew parent is raffling off tickets to an upcoming concert at the Capital One Arena. Seats are in an executive suite with food and beverages. Come to the social to find out who the artist is and bid!!

3. HELP NEEDED: Parent Volunteer Positions. Thank you to those who have signed up for or expressed interest in the Dockmaster position. We have a few more board and committee positions that are (or will be) vacant and we are still looking for parent/guardians to fill. The positions are:

Fundraising Chair - Most of the responsibilities for this job are wrapping up for this season, but we would like to train someone who will be able to lead fundraising next year. Credit will be given for this season as well.

Membership Chair - Most of the responsibilities for this job are wrapping up for this season, but we would like to train someone who will be able to lead membership next year. Credit will be given for this season as well.

Craft Show Vendor Coordinator - The responsibilities for this job are complete for this season, but vendor coordination begins in the spring for next year’s event. The Craft Show is held in early November every year, so this is a great volunteer position for someone who wants to complete their volunteer duties early.

River Rat - This is a VASRA local organizing committee (LOC) position that our team MUST fill during the home regattas. River Rats are the parent volunteers who make sure that VASRA has one of the best, fully buoyed, race courses in America. No special skills are required other than a love of water and a desire to see our kids rowing under the best conditions possible.
  • Pre- and Post-season, river rats set-up and take-down the course (VASRA will have parent volunteers to assist) and equipment maintenance as needed
  • During Home Regattas, river rats:
    • Arrive early to ensure a safe course for the regatta– i.e. remove any debris and setup odds and ends for use during the regatta. NOTE: Since you are expected to arrive early and be at the home regattas, you will receive a parking pass for the regattas (so you don’t have to pay for parking or ride the bus) and you will have a VASRA badge which gives you free lunch and coffee/water during the regatta
    • Putting into place the start docks, start tower as well as the aligner’s platform
    • Depart once all equipment has been stowed away which means you have time to watch your child race
    • Course maintenance and safety patrol as required
NEW: Secretary - WTW Crew Booster Board Officer responsible for meeting agendas, meeting minutes, and maintaining these records. The Secretary maintains the yearly schedule of events in coordination with the Webmaster. This position is also responsible for the annual association meeting at the end of the school year and keeps the team awards updated.

If you are interested in any of these positions or want more information on them, please contact our President, Brian Boyle, at wtw.crew.president@gmail.com.

4. NEW: Naval Academy Rowing Field Trip will be Saturday, February 10th in Annapolis. This is an optional training opportunity, but is always in high demand and gets rave reviews every year. Sign-up here. Parent permission form and payment of $30.00 due no later than Thursday, February 8th (cash or check made out to WT Woodson Crew-bring to practice February 8th). Mrs. Boyle will be at practice to collect the money and forms. Uniform is unis, current or previous design. Transportation is one FCPS bus; capacity 45 students. Returning rowers please bring clean older/extra unis to share with new rowers. New Rowers- please annotate uni size in the comments of the Sign-Up genius if you will need to borrow a uni. Two parent chaperones are needed to ride the bus to the event, stay the day and ride the bus back (also on the Genius). Bus departs WT Woodson Door 1 at 10:00am and returns at approximately 6:30pm. Bring snacks, unis, water bottle, travel clothes, and cash if desired for the US Naval Academy gift shop.

5. NEW: Save the Date for a WTW Boathouse Workday at WTW Crew Boathouse, Sandy Run Regional Park on February 19th from 9 - 11am. We are looking for three (3) adults and 12 student-athletes to prepare the equipment and boathouse for the Spring season. Sign-up Genius will be available in next week’s communication.

6. REMINDER: Our next Tag Day is this Saturday, February 3rd. Sign-up for Tag Days here! Three Tag Day shifts are left and we are ¾’s of the way to our Tag Day goal. Reviewing the sign-up sheet for February 3rd shows there is plenty of space left. Returning rowers/coxswains are reminded that they are required to do four (4) Tag Day shifts this year. If they did not do a Craft Show shift, they can make that up by doing another Tag Day. New rowers/coxswains are required to do three (3) shifts either Tag Day or Craft Show. Because our long term success is so dependent on Tag Days, we are offering an incentive to those who have completed their Craft Show and Tag Day requirements (5 or 3). Attend another Tag Day shift and you name will be put into a drawing to receive a Chipotle gift certificate ($10.00). One winner per remaining Tag Day shift. Once Tag Days are complete, those that did extra shifts will have their name put in a hat to receive a donated $50.00 gift certificate. So as an example, volunteer completed rowers, sign-up for the three remaining shifts and you have three (3) chances to earn $50.00

7. REMINDER: Last Swim Test. The last swim test of the season will be held on February 4th at the Audrey Moore Pool from 2-3pm. All rowers and coxswains must complete a one-time swim test. We have reached out to those still requiring the swim test directly. If you have not completed a swim test and have not confirmed this one, contact Mrs. Shawley immediately at wtwcrewactivities@gmail.com.

8. REMINDER: World Indoor Rowing Championships registration deadline is this week. An opportunity for our rowers (and their families) to participate in the World Indoor Rowing Championships! Usually held in Boston, this year TC Williams High School in Alexandria, VA is hosting it in place of the Mid–Atlantic Ergs on February 17th and 18th. Those that have participated in the Mid–Atlantic Ergs in the past know it is a tremendous, upbeat event that provides a great opportunity for our rowers. The World Indoor Rowing Championship this year promises to be even better. Go to Regatta Central Erg Sprints site to get all the details and register by this Wednesday, January 31, 2018.

NOTE: Signing up for the championship can be confusing. If you have any questions, email the WTW Crew Booster President at wtw.crew.president@gmail.com and he will walk you through it. Your age category is your age as of 31 December 2018. Many seniors will have to participate in the 19-23 category.

If you would like to share a student-athlete accomplishment/achievement, no matter what it is, please send them to wtwcrewcommunications@gmail.com. Send your submissions by Friday of each week. We will publish them in the following Monday issue of the WTW Crew Update.
